An installation often requires LPS against the direct effects of lightning: a lightning strike can cause a significant temperature rise (hundreds of degrees) in some conductive parts of a structure potentially igniting the building. High buildings such as church steeples, towers, water towers, cranes etc. are more likely to be struck by lightning because they act as large ground conductors. To protect a building, it is therefore highly recommended to channel this discharge of energy to the ground by installing one or more lightning rods at the culminant points in combination with a network of conductors and earth rods.
